Mise En Scene Prep

In order to see if our ideas for costume, props and actors would work well together, as a group we have completed preparation for our mise en scene. Focusing on the character Sarah played by Lydia Hughes she is seen by the audience as being Chloe's (Tia) best friend in the equilibrium stage of the plot. However in the recognition of the disruption stage it is clear to the audience that Sarah (Lydia) and Jessica (Ella) aren't the "best friends" they seem to be. To help convey this to the audience we decided that Sarah and Jessica will be wearing black dresses and have red or purple lipstick with dark smokey eye makeup. By these two characters wearing black dresses and having this style of make up which illustrates their deceitfulness and immorality towards their "best friend" (Chloe). Combining dark eye makeup with red or purple lipstick, it conforms an aggressive personality, therefore portraying the characters personalities. In addition to this, the dark eye make up which will be smokey as stated above as it slowly starts to fade yet it is a bold colour it gives off a sense of mystery which could potentially make the audience aware of these characters before the truth is slowly revealed. As Lydia (Sarah) as bright blue eyes, with dark smokey eye make up and red lipstick her crystal blue eyes are emphasised in contrast to her skin colour. The smokey eye make up creates emphasis on Lydia's eye colour which immediately causes disorientation for the audience. The audience is intrigued by the difference colours used as blue represents wisdom and trust whilst black represents death and evil. Due to this, it is evident that the dark smokey eye make up reflects Lydia's character perfectly as well as Ella's character. In comparison to Lydia and Ella's character, I will be wearing a white dress with natural make up. As I play the victim character, the white dress conveys my innocence emphasised by the natural make up on my face enhancing the purity and cleanliness of my character.

To see if the make up worked well for the characters of Sarah and Jessica, we decided to test it on Lydia who is playing the character of Sarah. Lydia watched videos on YouTube to create the perfect dark coloured smokey eye. The smokey eye represents good gone to bad as this is exactly what Sarah does as she is seen as a good best friend to Chloe in the equilibrium stage yet later on in the recognition of the disruption she is seen to be evil. The decision for the dark smokey eye make up and red or purple lipstick is final, pictures below show what Lydia's and Ella's make up will be like when they play the character of Sarah and Jessica in our film Obsess.

The videos below show Lydia (Sarah) getting ready for the party which is shown in our official film trailer for our coursework. As Lydia is putting on her own make up, this conforms the reality of what girls actually do when getting ready for a party. For example, they wouldn't have a professional make up artist coming to their house to apply their make up for them. The audience are able to have a slight insight into the film making a connection between the audience and the characters.
