Final Plot Idea Powerpoint

Above is the Powerpoint in which as a group we pitched to our target audience. We created this presentation as a group (me, Lydia and Ella) including a narrative structure, the types of shots we desired to include in our trailer, the locations which would feature in our trailer, the key characters and the actors starring in our trailer as well as our style inspiration.
The main issues which were raised by our target audience was they were unaware of whom the antagonist character was as the character is unknown to the audience. Our initial ideas were that by having the antagonist character as an unknown character this would create a greater enigma for the target audience, creating a sense of thrill and mystery for them. They would only find out whom the antagonist was when watching the film "Obsess". However later on in the presentation the antagonist name was revealed to them as Michael, they were then unsure of the connection in which Michael had with the other characters (Ricky, Chloe, Sarah and Jessica). Therefore after pitching our plot idea to our target audience, we addressed this issue and decided that Ricky and Michael are going to be cousins. In this aspect, it is revealed that Michael is jealous of Ricky and the relationship he has with Chloe due to the fact Michael has an obsession with Chloe. Ricky is completely oblivious of Michael's obsession which is only revealed later on in the film trailer when Ricky enters Michael's room after the sudden death of Michael's father.

Deadlines

So I have a clear time frame of when all planning, filming and editing should be completed by I have set myself deadlines. By setting deadlines I know myself that everything needs to be done by a certain date in order to complete everything on time.

Planning - Completed by 21st November
Filming - Completed by 19th December
Editing - Completed by 16th December

Final Plot Idea

For our final plot idea we came up with the storyline to follow the narrative theory of Tvzetan Todorov.
1st stage - Equilibrium: everything is balance
In the equilibrium stage the group of girls have just finished their last day of sixth form and as they are all the age of eighteen they are all legal to go clubbing. The group of girls have decided to celebrate by going clubbing in Central London. Therefore this will appeal to our target audience as they are London based girls so they are familiar with the location and have links to London.
2nd stage - Disruption of the Equilibrium:
In this disruption stage, whilst the girls are clubbing their drinks get spiked by a group of people in the club (antagonist characters.)
3rd stage - Recognition of the disruption:
One of the girls boyfriends (protagonist character) realises the girls have been spiked by the group and as he is a bouncer for the club he has authority. This conforms the ideologies of a male figure in an action thriller film.
4th stage - An attempt to repair the damage:
The protagonist male character goes after the group in the club on his motorbike which conforms the conventions of an action thriller film by using a motorcycles which is one of the most common use of transport. He then prepares to have a fight with them followed by many chases which are all conventions of an action thriller film.
5th stage - New Equilibrium:
The protagonist character is successful in the end and wins the battle against the antagonist characters. However this part will not be shown in our film trailer to create an enigma for the target audience. To see if the storyline would appeal to our target audience I created a survey online and sent it to our target audience that way we was able to see what they thought would be effective and what we should change. Here are the results:

Research Reflection

Reflecting on the research I have completed when looking at a wide range of action thriller films such as Gone Girl, Fast & Furious 6, The Dark Knight Rises, Face/Off, The Bourne Ultimatum and Taken all the films protagonist character are males. Therefore for our group's film I believe the main protagonist character needs to be a male in order to be a successful action thriller film. The main reason why men are the protagonist character is due to the conventions of an action thriller film as action thriller films always have a mission waiting that needs to be completed. Men are the more dominant gender in comparison to women so they are mostly likely to win in fights against other males. Other conventions of an action thriller film consist of:
  • Futuristic cars, high speed vehicles, motorcycles - most common use of transport
  • Explosions and crashes
  • Massive destruction - disruption stage
  • Protagonist and antagonist characters (good vs evil)
  • Upbeat, nerve racking soundtracks
  • Big cities - modern world
  • Spectacular fights between different groups
  • Killings: death of loved ones
  • All characters have a motive in order to complete a mission
  • Stunts and chases
  • Fast paced action
All these conventions appeal to our target audience which is 16-24 year olds who are predominantly female and live in London. The conventions of an action thriller film create thrill, suspense and anxiety for the target audience in which they will not feel these emotions when watching any other genre of film. The adrenalin rush the target audience get when watching an action thriller film make the film memorable and successful in which will be talked about for a long period of time afterwards as the film has had such a big impact on them.
Looking at different action thriller films of the trailer, posters and promotional products which were released prior to the film has been helpful as I was able to analyse each media product. I was able to see what I thought was effective as well as identify the conventions of an action thriller film. This will impact on my production work as I now have a clearer idea in what is successful and what I should include when creating my film poster, trailer and magazine cover in order to leave a memorable experience for my target audience.

Promotional Campaign - TAKEN

Poster Analysis - The Bourne Ultimatum

The film poster for The Bourne Ultimatum denotes the back of the protagonist character Jason Bourne as well as the location in which the film is set. As this image of Jason Bourne is a medium long shot and has been taken from behind and he is looking out on the view this connotes that he wants his identity to be hidden. As the image looks like Jason Bourne from behind, this appeals to the audience as in some aspect it could potentially not actually be him due to the fact the audience are unable to see his facial features. The audience are unaware of the storyline of the film before seeing the film so by not showing the audience Jason Bourne’s face could imply that something has happened to him and he has been taken over. As the poster denotes a male looking out to the city of London, it connotes that he is protecting the city as well as thinking about what missions he is going to complete next. As the target audience are able to see the back of the male character they are able to see his physique clearly and he is a broad built man, which represents him being a strong character. This conforms the ideologies of a male as males are represented as being powerful, independent and dominate. This appeals to the target audience, as they want to find out what occurs in the film and wont be able to unless they see the film. In addition to this, the primary and secondary target audience will also want to go and see the film due to the fact the character of Jason Bourne will be familiar to them therefore they feel they have connection with him.
The film poster follows the narrative theory of Roland Barthes and Claude Levi Strauss, as Roland Barthes believes that there are five codes, which are woven into any narrative. These consist of the hermeneutic code, which is the code of enigmas, and puzzles as well as the porairetic code which is the code of action and any action initiated must be completed. In addition to this narrative theory, Claude Levi Strauss as he believes all narratives are driven by binary oppositions. As Jason Bourne is globally known, it is clear to audiences worldwide that Jason Bourne who is the protagonist character in this film is needed by the society to save them and the city as well as capture and kill the antagonist characters. This appeals to the target audience, as they know Jason Bourne and they want to see if he will be successful once again, yet they will only know if he has completed his mission by watching the film. This leaves the audience with hermeneutic code an enigma and it can only be solved by the porairetic code, which is the action, completed by Batman in the film. Yet following the narrative theory of Claude Levi Strauss, Jason Bourne can be viewed as both the protagonist and antagonist characters throughout the film in different aspects, which creates confusion, suspense and anxiety which conforms the conventions of an action film. The main assumptions underpinning the poster is that Jason Bourne is the powerful male figure who is relied on by numerous of people to protect himself, the people around him as well as the society in general. The audience are able to see that Jason Bourne is strong due to his physique, which can be seen clearly on the film poster. Therefore the film poster appeals to the target audience as they encouraged to see if Bourne would be fortunate again to win the battle that is about to commence with the antagonist. The target audience I think The Bourne Ultimatum appeals to is both males and females from the age of twelve upwards who are predominately from America or England as this is an American film. However this film could appeal to anyone from any ethnicity or occupation. As this film is the third film in the Bourne film series, this film could appeal to both the primary and secondary target audience.

Poster Analysis - Face/Off

The film poster for the film Face/Off is very simply in comparison to contemporary film posters. The Face/Off film poster denotes half of John Travolta’s face as well as half of Nicolas Cage’s face. By having half of each characters face merged together to nearly form one face implies to the audience that they are going to turn into one person. Focusing on John Travolta’s face, he is being represented as a more stern character with authority due to the fact he is an FBI agent in the film. This conforms the ideologies of an FBI agent/police officer as they have power over the rest of the people in society due to their occupation. Nicolas Cage plays a terrorist in this film, so he is being represented as a character that just wants to win the battles he faces and that he completed everything he has set in mind. The image denotes half of his face, which looks like a mug shot image that would be taken after the FBI has captured him. This appeals to the target audience as John Travolta is being represented as the protagonist character and Nicolas Cage is being represented as the antagonist character. In addition to this, as both images being placed right next to each other it connotes that they are in a battle fighting each other. This appeals to the target audience as they both are competitive characters so it will be a very hard to fight so they will only find out who has been successful in winning the battle by going to see the film. The poster denotes that the image of the characters takes up three quarters of the film poster, therefore they are the main focus in the film and the audience are aware of this immediately.
As John Travolta plays the FBI agent in the film, it is clear to the target audience that he is the protagonist character. John Travolta is needed by society to capture the antagonist character of a terrorist whom is played by Nicolas Cage. This appeals to the target audience, as they can see from the film poster that both characters look competitive and confident yet they want John Travolta to be successful and win. Yet they will know, the events that occur in the film unless they go and watch it for themselves. This leaves the audience with hermeneutic code an enigma and it can only be solved by the porairetic code, which is the action, completed by John Travolta in the film. Yet following the narrative theory of Claude Levi Strauss, as he believes that binary oppositions drive all narratives. As John Travolta is being represented as a “good” character and Nicolas Cage is being represented as an “evil” character, both these characters together are binary opposites. Claude Levi Strauss also believes that one side of the binary pair is always seen by a particular society to be more valued over the other. In the film Face/Off John Travolta featuring as an FBI agent after Nicolas Cage featuring as a terrorist is seen as more valued. The main assumptions underpinning the poster is that after a long, difficult battle John Travolta will be successful in the long run against his enemy Cage. This appeals to the target audience as it creates confusion and anxiety for them, which encourages them to go and see the film, and follows the conventions of an action film. I believe the target audience this film would appeal would be to both males and females of the age from fifteen upwards. The region in which I personally think the target audience are from are mainly America and Britain, however the film is aimed at any region. The target audience could be any ethnicity or occupation so this doesn’t impact on a defined target audience the film could appeal to anyone from the age of fifteen upwards.

Poster Analysis - The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises film poster denotes the main protagonist character being situated in the centre of the page with the location in flames behind him. This appeals to the audience straight away as it connotes that Gotham has gone up in flames and Batman is going to save the city as well as the people. The poster denotes the protagonist character ‘Batman’ being represented as a strong, powerful superhero. This is emphasised by the costume he is wearing as well as his facial expressions and physicality. Batman is wearing his iconic, globally known superhero outfit, which is the colour black. By Batman wearing all black this connotes to the audience that Batman is hiding his real identity, he is secretive and unknown due to the colour black represents these meanings. As a result of Batman wearing all black it creates mystery for the audience. Batman’s representation on this film poster conforms the ideologies of male characters as he is being presented as trying to protect his city and the people that live there. The poster denotes the location of Gotham, which is known to be the city where Batman lives to the target audience. This appeals to the target audience mainly the primary target audience, as this is a location they are familiar with so they feel a relation with this film encouraging them to go and see the film even more. By having the dominant image of the protagonist character Batman, as the main focus on the film poster it appeals to the target audience, as Batman is the successful iconic character who is globally known to the Batman franchise.
As Batman is globally known, it is clear to audiences worldwide that Batman who is the protagonist character in this film are needed by the society of Gotham to save them and the city as well as capture and kill the antagonist characters. This appeals to the target audience, as they know Batman, as they want to see if Batman will be successful once again, yet they will only know if Batman has completed his mission by watching the film. This leaves the audience with hermeneutic code an enigma and it can only be solved by the porairetic code, which is the action, completed by Batman in the film. Yet following the narrative theory of Claude Levi Strauss, Batman can be viewed as both the protagonist and antagonist characters throughout the film in different aspects, which conforms the conventions of an action film. The main assumptions underpinning the poster is that Batman is being relied on again to save the city and people of Gotham yet he is unknown to the large majority of society as nobody knows his real identity. This is emphasised by the fact his face and body is completely covered in his ‘Batman’ costume, which is known to everybody in Gotham’s society. The audience are able to see that Batman is confident, strong as well as has authority. Therefore this appeals to the target audience as they encouraged to see if Batman would be fortunate again to win the battle that is about to commence with the antagonist. The target audience this poster is aimed at are both males and females from the age of twelve upwards. As part of the audience, my main assumption of this film is that the Batman is confident and strong enough. I am also relying on Batman to be successful. However I will not know what challenges Batman has undergone and if he has completed his mission with triumph unless I watch the film so overall the poster encourages the audience to go and see the film.

Poster Analysis - Fast & Furious 6

Focusing on the film poster for Fast and Furious 6, the main protagonist character is situated in the centre of the page with the rest of the cast behind him. The poster denotes the characters being represented as a strong body, people you would not mess with. This is emphasised by the costumes, facial expressions and body language. They are wearing tight clothes, which shows off their physique; this appeals to the target audience are they are able to see the male actor’s muscles clearly and the women all conform the perfect ideologies of what a women should look like to society.  The poster denotes the location of the England’s capital London which gives tells the audience that the film is set in London, appealing to English speaking audiences. There are high-speed sport cars situated next to the characters and these vehicles are iconic to the film as this is their main vehicle of transport in the film. The main font being “Fast & Furious 6”, the graphics for this font have been made to look like part of a car due to the metallic elements of the font, in silver colours. This appeals to the target audience, both the primary and secondary target audience as cars play an important part in the film. By having the dominant image of the main characters as the main focus on the film poster appeals to the target audience as they are key successful characters who are globally known to the Fast and Furious film franchise.
As Fast and Furious is globally known, it is clear to audiences worldwide that Dominic Toretto who is the protagonist character in this film and his team are needed by Luke Hobbs to complete a mission and capture the antagonist characters. This appeals to the target audience as they want to know straight away who Dominic Toretto played by Vin Diesel and his team are after now. This leaves the audience with hermeneutic code an enigma and it can only be solved by the porairetic code, which is the action, completed by Toretto and his team in the film. Yet following the narrative theory of Claude Levi Strauss, all the characters can be viewed as both the protagonist and antagonist characters throughout the film in different aspects, which conforms the conventions of an action film.
This poster is for an action film and the conventions of action films are to be fast paced and create anxiety and suspense for the audience. By the main focus being of the protagonist characters being the main focus of the poster, they are known to be quick witted and rapid due to previous Fast and Furious films. The characters create suspense and anxiety for the audience so it appeals to them as they receive entertainment from watching the film, as they like to see how the Toretto and his team will be successful once again. The primary target audience could potentially receive adrenalin when watching the film due to the fact that the team are usually successful.
The main assumptions underpinning the poster is that yet again the Fast and Furious team will be successful which is emphasised by the image on the posture due to their facial expressions and body language as the audience are able to see clearly they are confident, strong, authoraitive characters. Therefore this appeals to the target audience as they encouraged to see if the team are fortunate again to win the battle that is about to commence with the antagonist. The target audience this poster is aimed at are both males and females from the age of twelve upwards. As part of the audience, my main assumption of this film is that the team are ahead of the game and will succeed yet I will not know what challenge they have undergone unless I watch the film so overall the poster encourages the audience to go and see the film.

Poster Analysis - Gone Girl

Focusing on the film poster for “Gone Girl” I think this appeals to the target audience in many ways. The male who is the main focus of the image is the protagonist character in the film. The poster denotes a long shot of him; he is being represented as an unhappy man with a serious look on his face due to the fact his wife has just gone missing. The editing on this image denotes his body shape looking disoriented as it is slightly disfigured which connotes that he has committed a violent, physical act and that could be the reason why his wife has disappeared. This appeals to the target audience as it creates an enigma for them and makes them think for themselves what was the husband’s role in his wife disappearance. Linking this to the ideologies of males, males like to have authority and in times stand alone so this image of the protagonist character standing by myself conforms the ideologies of males, as males like to be individualists. Which again, this appeals to the target audience as it creates confusion and it bewilders them to think why a husband would ever do anything bad to their own wife whom they truly love.
The poster denotes a male standing with a harsh look on his face and has his hands placed in his pockets. The connotative level of this is that he is thinking to himself about the events that have occurred, in addition to this that the events have affected him in a way that he feels isolated from society as he his body language denotes that he is standing in a timid way. He is wearing casual clothes of a shirt and trousers connotes that he does not care about his physical appearance at this particular time which makes the audience think that all he wants is his beloved wife back. As well as this the poster denotes an extreme close up of a female’s eyes in the sky above him; looking down on him. This appeals to the audience as the female (his wife) is being represented as an angel, which makes the audience think that she is not alive so he will never find her. By the eyes looking down on him, this is a connotation that she will always look down on him and look after him no matter what he has done to her. The location of this image denotes a large lake, which connotes that maybe the wife died, disappeared or was even found in the lake. The institution wouldn’t just show the audience a lake for no reason, so this lake could be an iconic lake when watching the film. This altogether appeals to the audience, as via the film poster this is one of the first times the audience come to terms with the film.  They will remember everything they see on the poster before going to watch the film and it encourages them to go and view the film for themselves to find out what happens.
The poster follows the narrative theory of Tvzetan Todorov and Roland Barthes. Firstly focusing on Todorov’s theory, as he believes that all storylines have three stages the first stage being the equilibrium, where everything is balanced. The audience assume that the couple were initially happy together otherwise they wouldn’t have been together in the first place. The second stage being disruption, where something goes wrong at this stage the audience know that the wife has suddenly gone missing but they don’t know the reason behind her disappearance, which then links, to Roland Barthes’ theory. Roland Barthes believes that there are five codes, which are woven into any narrative. The hermeneutic code which is the codes of enigmas and puzzles which the audience are currently experiencing and this is why the poster appeals to them as they are having to face a challenge themselves to find out the answer behind the women’s disappearance.
This poster is for an action; thriller film and the conventions of action thriller films are to be fast paced and created disorientation for the audience. By the editing techniques used on this poster of the protagonist’s character body being disfigured this creates confusion for the audience. In action films, males are predominately the protagonist characters as they always try to protect their loved ones and fight everyone else yet can be viewed as an antagonist character at the same time.
The main assumptions underpinning the film poster for “Gone Girl” is that the male has been hugely affected by his wife’s disappearance, which is denoted by his facial expressions and body language. By the women’s eyes in the sky it connotes that she had sadly passed away and he will never see her again. Therefore this appeals to the target audience as it emphasises the fact she has gone missing but it is up to them to find out the reasons behind her disappearance. The target audience this poster is aimed at are both males and females, from the age of eighteen upwards due to the age rating of the film being an eighteen; no viewers under the age of eighteen are able to see the film in the cinema. As part of the audience the main assumption I make from viewing this poster is that the husband has a role in his wife’s disappearance and she has passed away. However, I will not know the truth unless I go and see the film for myself.

Trailer Analysis - The Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Ultimatum
2007
Director - Paul Greengrass
Institution – Universal Pictures
The Bourne Ultimatum is an American-German action, spy, and thriller film and is the third in the Bourne film series. Matt Damon returns to his role as Ludlum's signature character, former CIA assassin and psychogenic amnesiac Jason Bourne. In this particular film, he continues on his search for information about his past before he was part of Operation Treadstone and becomes a target of a similar assassin program.
The medium close up shot of the protagonist character Jason Bourne played by Matt Damon is an iconic scene as he is the main focus in the shot even though he is walking in public the rest of the public have been blurred out. Straight away this appeals to the target audience in numerous of ways; both the primary and secondary target audience, as he is the globally known actor to play Jason Bourne. Dialogue from a conversation he is having with a women is put on top of this particular moment as later on in the trailer it then goes on to show a two shot scene of Jason Bourne talking to this women about all his identities he has been given before in the past.  The trailer then goes on to show an over the shoulder shot of Jason and the lady having a conversation, where it is made clear to the audience Jason Bourne was one of the original people on the Operation Treadstone programme.
Aerial shots of locations in which Jason Bourne has visited are then shown which appeals to the target audience as if they are from those particular countries or had connections with those countries it encourages them to see the film more. The lighting in these scenes are natural daylight and whilst the images of these locations are being shown there is dialogue over them stating what each country is (London and Italy) by the assassin programme that are after him. The trailer then goes on to show the audience different scenes from the film which leaves the audience an enigma. The sound used in the trailer I feel really emphasises the fact the film is an action film as through the use of non diegetic, diegetic, soundtracks, dialogue and sound FX included in these scenes it creates a more fast paced trailer, creating more suspense for the audience. Therefore, the use of sound helps to make the trailer more effective and appeal to the audience.
The scenes from the trailer denote Jason Bourne wearing black clothes throughout which connotes the fact that he is trying to hide from everyone. The colour black relates to the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, and as a result it creates an air of mystery. Black keeps things bottled up inside, hidden from the world which relates to the protagonist character Jason Bourne in many ways. This appeals to the audience as Jason Bourne is trying to protect himself from the external emotional stress, which is currently occurring to him by the assassins.
Overall, the character of Jason Bourne represents the fact that he is a strong male with power and authority trying to protect himself and the people around him. This conforms the ideologies of males and how they are strong and stern always trying to protect themselves and the people they care about. However, this also conforms the conventions of a protagonist character in an action film as they are always males the majority of the time. I believe this trailer follows the narrative theory of Claude Levi Strauss as he states that all narratives are driven by binary oppositions and that it is found that one side of the binary pair are always seen by a particular society or culture to be more valued over the other. Therefore, Jason Bourne can be seen as a protagonist and antagonist character by different groups of film and as this film is about an assassin team trying to capture him this film moves forward in the storyline. This trailer would appeal to the target audience as I believe the people who enjoy action films or admire the characters who are featured in the film would watch this film.

Trailer Analysis - Face/Off

Face/Off
1997
Director - John Woo
Institution – Buena Vista International
Face/Off is an American science fiction action thriller starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. John Travolta features as an FBI agent and Nicolas Cage features as a terrorist. The film has Travolta and Cage each playing two personalities, therefore making both of them the protagonist and antagonist characters at the same time. FBI agent John Travolta undergoes a face-transplant surgery and assumes the identity and physical appearance of Nicolas Cage a ruthless terrorist, but the plan backfires when the same criminal impersonates the cop with the same method. The trailer shows the two protagonist and antagonist characters stating why they hate each other and how they are after each other so the storyline is made clear to audiences when watching the trailer. I believe the target audience for this film would appeal to both males and females of the age from fifteen upwards. The region in which I personally think the target audience are from are mainly America and Britain, however the film is aimed at any region. The target audience could be any ethnicity or occupation so this doesn’t impact on a defined target audience the film could appeal to anyone from the age of fifteen upwards.
The trailer starts with a close up shot of John Travolta who features as an FBI agent, the audience are able to see clearly his facial expressions and the shot denotes a stressed FBI agent telling his side of the situation and who Nicolas Cage is to him. There is a soundtrack in the background of the trailer of non-diegetic sound which is incidental music in which is the use of music to punctuate a specific event. The music in the background is dull music, with sounds of knifes being slashed together slowly which connotes a sense of mystery and suspense. The trailer then goes to show a 360 degree camera angle of John Travolta which the audience are able to view John Travolta’s physicality, after Nicolas Cage then transfers into John Travolta using his same tone of voice. By doing this, it appeals to the audience as the audience are able to see the hate between the two characters and as they only show the FBI agent talking, the audience automatically think Nicolas Cage is the antagonist which again creates a sense of confusion for the audience as they are currently unaware of the storyline and this encourages them to go and watch the film even more.
Long shots are then shown of events that occur in the film of different action events where the two characters are fighting against each other. The trailer through the use of jump cuts shows all these events occurring. Throughout these scenes there are is sound FX such as explosions, crashes and gun shots going off which conforms the conventions of an action film. The scenes are all natural lighting of locations whilst in comparison to the start of the trailer it is all dark lighting with the only lighting being focused on their face. The audience are then able to see that these two characters are the main characters in this film.
Both characters are males and the costumes they wear conform the representation of males throughout the trailer as they are both wearing suits which connotes their authority and male power and make the audience think which character will win this battle. In addition to this, the trailer follows the ideologies of that males are strong, authoritative characters with power and the audience can see this by the suits they are wearing so their masculinity is shown through this, the props such as guns they use and have on them at all times as well as their physicality. This appeals to the target audience as they are able to see the two men in action fighting against one another, which encourages them to see the film more as they want to see which male will win in the end.
Overall different scenes from the start and middle of the film are shown from extreme long shots of locations and action events occurring to medium close up shots of character’s reactions to what has just taken place creating an enigma for the audience. The trailer is generally fast paced following the conventions of an action film with loud FX sound effects of gun shots, cars crashing and general fighting throughout. The film follows the narrative theory of Tvzetan Todorov, Claude Levi Strauss and Vladmir Propp with both characters being represented as both good and evil characters in different aspects. The trailer for Face/Off, I believe altogether appeals to the target audience as they are people who enjoy action films or admire the characters who are featured in the film as well as the trailer can be viewed by a large target audience.

Trailer Analysis - Gone Girl

Gone Girl
2014
Director - David Fincher
Institution – 20th Century Fox

Gone Girl has just recently been released in October 2014. Gone Girl is a film about a man’s wife who has gone missing. When his wife's disappearance becomes the focus of an intense media circus; the spotlight is turned on him and it is suspected that he may not be innocent. The genre of this film is drama, mystery and thriller and therefore the trailer of Gone Girl shows all three of these genres making it a hybrid film. The trailer for Gone Girl appeals to the audience to see the film using many different techniques. I believe the target audience for this film are both males and females from the age of eighteen upwards. These males and females are from all different ethnicities and occupations but as this film is American based I believe this film would appeal to predominately American and British people. The age certificate of the film being an eighteen only allows people of this age and upwards to see the film. This means the film may include scenes of hard drug use, horror, explicit sex, sadistic violence and sexual violence which are not appropriate for people under this age. Even though a majority of people who are younger than eighteen may watch the trailer of Gone Girl, this appeals to them in some aspect to see the film. As the younger audience are rebelling and want to view the film due to the fact the film may excite them and they too want to see what happens in the film.
The establishing shot of a large group of people from the local community where he lives with his wife are all standing together as a force holding candles’ listening to a talk by the man whose wife has gone missing. The audience can hear the diegetic sound of the man talking stating about his wife’s disappearance; it is clear by his tone of voice that he is distraught about the situation and he is doing all that he can in order to relocate her. This is emphasised by a long shot as the audience are able to see the large group of people standing together holding candles which the frame denotes that it is evening time and the only source of light is candles. By each person holding a candle this connotes that candles are a visible reminders of possible triumph over darkness which in some aspect could be seen to the audience that his wife could potentially be found as you have to experience the bad days in order to have the good days. Overall the lighting is low key, this helps with the fact that the film is about a women who has gone missing and this is the first scene shown which helps to create a sense of mystery and suspense as the audience have no idea yet about what has occurred with the woman. The setting is on a large green which has a stand where the husband is standing with her parents beside him. There is a large billboard poster of the women who has gone missing face with big red font stating the word ‘missing’ in capital letters. By the word ‘missing’ being in red and in capital it connotes that danger has occurred and it is urgent that the women is relocated; this is why her husband is doing everything he can to find her. This appeals to the target audience as it makes them think that her husband has got nothing to do with his wife going missing or the fact he has done something to harm her as he is the one who is putting in the most effort to relocate her. The audience at first may want to believe him as he has her parents behind him showing a united front. This is a dramatic start to the trailer as the protagonist is pleading for help to find his beloved wife.
The second frame of the trailer appeals to the target audience as it denotes two middle aged people one male and one female who are in a relationship standing in the doorway of a room in their house in which they live in together. This frame is a scene from the film which has been shown of the two protagonist characters even though it has not yet been revealed but the male could potentially be the antagonist. The audience can see that the male is going into kiss the female who is his wife. His two fingers are placed under her chin and her head is at an angle facing upwards going into kiss her husband. This is a two shot and the audience are able to see the two characters and the type of relationship they have which connotes a loving relationship but the male has more authority as he is holding her chin up to kiss her whilst leaning his head towards her. Focusing on the costume the characters are wearing is that the male is wearing a dark coloured shirt and the female is also wearing a dark coloured v-neck jumper.  The theme music in the background of the trailer is of a man singing and the line he is singing at this particular moment of the trailer is ‘a face I will never forget’ Theme music is a key passage of music linked to what is occurring in the film helping to create a mood. This appeals to the audience as it could be seen in some aspect that it is as if the husband is singing to her saying that his wife’s face is one he will never forget as she had such a big impact in his life and now that she has gone missing that is life is completely ruined and he will miss her deeply. The colours used are similar to the first scene and are all dark colours with only one source of light coming from a light in the room in the background. Both scenes so far, only having minimum lighting which emphasises a sense of mystery and suspense again to the audience as everybody thinks that the husband is the last person involved with his wife’s disappearance. From just these two scenes and frames I have chosen to analyse from the trailer it is unknown to the audience yet what has actually happened to his wife. This in turn really appeals to the audience to go and watch the film in order to find out. At this moment the audience are stuck in two minds when watching the trailer trying to make a decision for themselves into what they think has taken place and if her beloved husband who is shown loving her has done something bad to her or if he is indeed innocent.
The trailer then goes on to a frame which denotes her husband who is previously seen trying to find his wife whom means so much to him and giving talks to the local people about trying to find her now running away from a large group of people who are represented as the media press. This implies that maybe the truth has now come out about her disappearance; which he is now trying to run away from. This frame is a wide shot so it is focusing on the surroundings as well as the object of the frame which is the male at the front who is her husband. This connotes that the husband feels isolated and nervous of the truth that is about to emerge. The costume the husband is wearing are smart formal clothes of a shirt, blazer and dark trousers, throughout the trailer he is always smartly dressed even through the disappearance of his wife this displays that he takes pride in his appearance. In addition to this, it appeals to the audience as it makes them think due to the face it could also be seen in some aspect that the disappearance hasn’t affected him a huge amount as you would expect someone who has lost someone so close to them to be a mess and not look after themselves very well as they are trying to emotionally cope themselves with the lost that has recently occurred. This scene appeals to the audience as it makes them want to see the film in order to find out why her husband is now running away and later on in the scene gets straight into a police car. This infers that he has done something malicious to her and he could potentially be handing himself into the police. He could be saving himself the stress of the media press trying to get to him, until the police find out the truth. Therefore this encourages the audience to find out the truth about her husband and his effect on her disappearance.
The end frame of the trailer shows his wife dead underwater which implies she has been drowned as earlier on in the trailer she is shown in the bath. However the end frame is made even more dramatic by the use of diegetic sound by the lead protagonist ‘I did not kill my wife, I am not a murder’ he emphasises the word not. The audience are now left in real doubt which encourages them to find out about her cause of death which appeals to them even more as they are now unable to find out what has occurred unless they go and see the film for themselves.
The characters being represented in Gone Girl are both males and females who are of a middle age with a profession. The audience can see that they are in a relationship and are married as the male states in the very first scene ‘my wife has gone missing.’ This trailer denotes that they are a wealthy couple as they live in a large house in America with modern interior as numerous amounts of scenes are set in their kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. This trailer to some extent shows a stereotypical married couple as it shows them deeply in love about to kiss.  However it also shows the negative elements of a married couple with broken glass on the floor which implies an argument. The audience then sees the couple arguing later on in the trailer, which then makes the audience think that the male could of potentially have killed his wife due to an argument that has occurred between them. He is trying to cover up the fact he has done something to her by giving talks to the local community where they live about finding her. Therefore the representations of the married couple can be seen as regressive due to the fact it shows them being in love and attending dinner dates together with friends and family. As well as progressive due to the fact that he is running away from the press later on in the trailer which connotes to the audience that the truth has come out about his wife’s disappearance as the truth is known to always come out in the end.
The psychographics of the type of people going to watch this film are people who enjoy mystery and dramatic thriller films, that like suspense as well as enjoying action films. This film could attract both primary and secondary target audience as the primary target audience could be people who go to the cinema to watch films of this genre (which are drama, mystery, action and thriller.) For example films like Taken, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and All Good Things. In addition to this, the primary target audience could be fans who have read the book Gone Girl before as it was initially a book before the film. The secondary target audience could be fans who follow the celebrities starring in the film and the protagonist characters in the film are Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Ben Affleck has also starred in Gone, Argo, Chasing Amy and Runner, Runner. Rosamund Pike has featured in Jack Reacher, The World’s End and Johnny English Reborn.
Focusing on uses and gratifications the target audience will get entertainment from this film as they escape from their own lives and focus on the disappearance of this women and how it is affecting her husband. Watching this film is a form of escapism and stimulates the senses and adrenalin levels of the audience. As they may not have experienced somebody going missing in their lives they get surveillance from it, as they are finding out things from the outside world as it not common that somebody’s wife or husband goes missing every day. However, a small selection of the target audience may have personal identity with this film as they could potentially identify with the characters on screen and relate to them in some aspect such as if they’ve lost someone they love due to death, arguments or distance. Another reason why my target audience would want to see this film due to personal relationships as they have an interest in the characters’ lives, personal relationships with family and friends and talking about the film could potentially strength their relationships with people close to them.
The institutions which produced and controlled this film are 20th Century Fox. This institution is a large global film institution meaning this film will be distributed worldwide. As this film could potentially be a global success the trailer encourages the target audience to see the film even more as Gone Girl was initially a book beforehand. This makes the audience want to be part of this potential global success. Linking Gone Girl to Todorov’s narrative theory he believes that all stories has three stages. The equilibrium which is the first stage and everything is balanced, things are going well. The disruption which is the second stage and something has gone wrong and the final third stage which is known as the re-equilibrium which is when things are balanced again even though it may be different from the start. From what can be seen by the audience from the trailer of Gone Girl it could potentially convey Todorov’s narrative theory. Due to the fact the trailer shows the couple in love which is the equilibrium, then the wife goes missing which is the disruption stage and the re-equilibrium is yet to be shown which again appeals to the audience and encourages them to see the film.
Overall, I believe that the trailer of Gone Girl appeals to the target audience as the re-equilibrium stage is not shown which creates suspense and mystery for the audience. The audience can only see the enigma of the film so the slow build-up of the trailer coupled with the dramatic start and end of the trailer only showing the start and middle scenes of the film leaves the audience in no doubt that this is a must see movie. As individuals the target audience’s minds are enquiring and so for their own personal fulfilment they need to know the truth about her disappearance. The soundtrack in the background of the trailer ‘She – Elvis Castello’ is memorable to the viewers of the trailer and also links to the romantic film Notting Hill, 1999. The song has romantic connotations but in the film Gone Girl it relates to the girl that has gone missing making the target audience feel emotional. Both Gone Girl and Notting Hill are films about looking for a girl so this choice of soundtrack is effective and clever as they both have similar storylines in the films.

Trailer Analysis - The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises
2012
Director - Christopher Nolan
Institution – Warner Brothers
The Dark Knight Rises is the final film of the Batman film trilogy and the sequel to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight Rises is set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight find Gotham at a peaceful time. This is due to fact Batman has now taken over the fall for Harvey Dent's murder. However, a new evil villain named Bane has arrived in Gotham and aims to take over the city and expose the truth behind who Harvey Dent really was. Meanwhile Wayne Manor has gone under complete refurbishment so Bruce Wayne rarely ever leaves the estate.  Bane taking over the city by force, forces Batman to come out of retirement. But his allies are few and far apart. This straight away appeals to the target audience as it leaves them to the ultimate decision on whose side they are really on. From the trailer, I believe the target audience for this film are both males and females from the age of twelve upwards of any ethnicity and occupation. However, I think the majority of the target audience are from English speaking countries and are mainly British and American due to the fact that Batman is an American franchise. The primary target audience are people who follow the Batman franchise and have previously watched all the films before. The secondary target audience being people who follow the celebrities featured in the film such as; Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway who are all successful movie stars.
The establishing shot denotes a long shot followed by a close up of a young innocent boy standing in the middle of an American football stadium singing for his national team and the audience can hear diegetic sound of the boy singing whilst the crowd surrounding him are all cheering him. The lighting is all natural day light showing the audience currently a happy atmosphere. However the trailer then goes to show the villain character. When the villain character appears on screen through the use of a long shot, his face is covered and there is majority dark lighting which represents him to the audience as a villainous character. Despite the fact this is the first time the villain is seen by the audience in the trailer there is a soundtrack of the young boy still singing in the background which connotes that the villain is in disguise. These particular moments appeal to the audience as they feel sympathy towards the young boy and the crowds as the villain is about to attack them all without them knowing.
The trailer then goes on to show the iconic Wayne Manor estate with dialogue in the background of people having a conversation and a two shot of the two characters, from this it appeals to the audience as they are able to see the relationship between both characters who are clearly trying to stop the villain from doing any bad to Gotham yet it makes the audience question will they be successful and stop him? There is then extreme long shots of Gotham; the location in which the film is set as well as iconic buildings. This appeals to the target audience as it makes them believe that this is real life and that they are people of Gotham as well. The men shown at this particular moment are of an older age and are all formally dressed in suits which are ideologies of a perfect man. The men are represented to all be fighting one another which conforms the conventions of an action film as it is all fast faced with spectacular fights as well as heroes and villains. A women is then shown in a two shot, the representation of the women is that she is beautiful, with dark hair, red lipstick and wearing a tight dress which again conforms the ideologies of the iconic women. She is seen to be manipulating the man she is currently dancing with which represents women as manipulative. This appeals to the target audience as it conforms the representation of males and females as males always want to be the one with authority and protect other people and where they come from. However females always try to be the one in charge and manipulate men, therefore this appeals to the target audience as they want to see how the women try and control the men but the men still take over.

Throughout the trailer there is a majority of dark lighting as the villain character Bane is mostly visible throughout the trailer as he is the villainous character. In addition to this, there are numerous extreme long shot and long shots showing spectacular fights, stunts, special effects and heroes vs villains battles. The trailer conforms the conventions of an action film in numerous of ways such as the trailer is fast paced with sound FX such as gunshots, car crashes as well as a sound theme tracks of a drum which represents a heart peace. Therefore these particular sounds represent the anxiety and rapid pace within the film. This appeals to the target audience as they have seen Batman from start to end and now this is the final film so the heartbeat sound is slowly coming to an end.

Trailer Analysis - Fast and Furious 6

Fast & Furious 6
2013
Director – Justin Lin
Institution – Universal Pictures
Fast and Furious 6 is the sixth film in The Fast and Furious franchise. The film stars successful film starts such as Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson. Fast and Furious 6 is about the team following a professional criminal gang led my Dominic Toretto who is played by Vin Diesel himself who retired following their successful team work in Fast and Furious 5 but they are remain wanted to catch the criminal gang. So they are offered by Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson to clear the group’s criminal record who also allows them to return home in exchange for helping him to take down the criminal gang. All of this is first seen in the establishing shot of the trailer. From the trailer, I believe the target audience for this film are both males and females from the age of twelve upwards of any ethnicity and occupation. However, I think the majority of the target audience are from English speaking countries and are mainly British and American due to the fact that this Fast and Furious is an American franchise.
The establishing shot shows the luxurious location in which the film is initially set with natural summer season lighting and the audience can tell the it is a hot location by the costume the characters are wearing. This particular moment is the initial moment where Luke Hobbs confronts Dominic Toretto about his proposal of bringing him and his team back into action. This straight away appeals to the target audience straight away as it is set in a lavish location where the audience think straight away that they wish they were there. Dominic Toretto is a tanned, muscly man wearing a white vest top and Luke Hobbs is a large built, mix raced man, with muscles wearing a black tight top making their bodies viewable to the audience. This appeals to the secondary target audience who are mainly females who follow these celebrities and this film is one they would predominantly enjoy as the males bodies are on clear view. In addition to this, this particular moment in the trailer appeals to the primary target audience who have previously watched all the Fast and Furious films that the team could potentially be getting back together.
The trailer then shows a two shot between the two characters with dialogue in the background being spoken by the two main characters currently being seen. A high angle shot is then shown of a motorway with large vehicles travelling forward which shows that the two protagonist characters have come to an agreement and Toretto will help Hobbs solve his problem. This appeals to the target audience as it is now been revealed to them that a mission is about to be completed and Hobbs goes into more detail about the team they need to capture. The audience are then able to see a point of view shot followed by a black and white close up image of the victim Hobbs and Toretto are after, these appeals to the audience as they feel they are on a journey with Hobbs, Toretto and the rest of the team to capture this member in the crime gang.
Long shots of the locations the team will be travelling to are then shown of an aeroplane flying to London where Toretto’s team is based followed by close ups of each member of Toretto’s team. All members of the team are mainly males with one female which conforms the representation of males and females as well as follows the ideologies of that men are strong characters and the audience can see this by the tight clothing they are wearing so their muscles are visible. In addition to this, the woman is a tanned, beautiful female which follows the ideologies of a beautiful woman as well as the fact she enjoys fighting people and has two personalities which most women do. This appeals to the target audience as they are able to see the team all in action completing tasks in what they do best which encourages them to see the film more as they want to see what each team member has to bring to the team.
Overall different scenes from the start and middle of the film are shown from extreme long shots of locations and action events occurring to medium close up shots of character’s reactions to what has just taken place. The editing in this trailer is jump cuts from scene to scene and the representation is that everyone is in teams against each other fighting. The trailer is generally fast paced following the conventions of an action film with loud FX sound effects of cars blowing up, cars crashing and gun shots being fired all the time. In addition to this, there is a soundtrack in the background of “life in the fast lane” which links to the film as the film is all at a rapid face with non-stop action. The film follows the narrative theory of Tvzetan Todorov, Claude Levi Strauss and Vladmir Propp with many characters being represented as both good and evil characters in different aspects. The trailer for Fast and Furious 6, I believe altogether appeals to the target audience as they are people who enjoy action films or admire the characters who are featured in the film.

Genre/Sub-Genre

The genre we decided to explore is thriller and the sub genre we have decided to focus on is action. We decided to combine these two genres in order to create our ideal film because as a group these are the genres of film we most enjoy. We believe these genres of film are the most successful and appeal to a large mass target audience of both male and females from a young age of twelve upwards. They are the most memorable films as they create a sense of thrill and excitement that you will not receive when watching any other genre of film. They make audiences want to jump out of their seats, wanting to help the characters in the film and get involved due to the suspense and action packed events that occur in the film.

Plot Ideas

Focusing on the brief that we have been given to “produce a promotion package for a new film, to include a trailer together with a film magazine front cover, featuring the film and a poster for the film.” Our target audience are London based and aged sixteen to twenty four and are predominantly female.
The main genre for our film is thriller; therefore a possible title for our film needs to create thrill and excitement for our target audience without them seeing for the film and get them to think ‘yes I must go and watch this film’ as well as fit in with our sub-genre. As a group we decided our sub-genre is action.

Possible Title for the film:-
Ø  Absence / Absent
Ø  Anonymous / Nameless
Ø  Unforeseeable
Ø  Unexpected/ Unpredictable

Plans for the plot following the narrative theory of Tvzetan Todorov who believes all stories have three stages and a five part plan.
Three Stages:-
1st Stage - Equilibrium: everything is balanced, things are going well and all is fine
2nd Stage - Disruption: something goes wrong, someone has gone on a quest or a journey, a new person comes to town, the couple have had an argument
3rd Stage - Re-Equilibrium: things are balanced again, it may be different from the start but all is fine. The protagonist may have undergone a character shift.
Five Part Plan:-

Institution Ident

Film Production Company Name

As a group, we decided that our Film Production Company name would be 'UADA Films'. We wanted a name, which is both unique and mysterious. When considering names, we decided to translate different words into Latin to generate a sense of 'thrill' overall. We found that the word 'Haunted' translated into 'Uada' in Latin. Immediately, all three of us felt that this random, yet meaningful name blended well with our genre and aim to create mystery throughout our action thriller film.

Mood Board

The next task was to create a mood board of initial ideas for our film. The type of images we were looking for when creating our mood board were images of locations in which successful action thriller films had been set that we had watch or knew about. The genre of film we have decided as a group we want to base our film on is an action thriller film therefore this is a hybrid genre film. In addition to this, we had to collect images of existing films, props, costumes and iconic stills from films. By creating a mood board and collecting numerous amount of images the imagery helps set the theme and tone therefore it gave us inspiration as a group and individually what we aim our film trailer to look like and include the conventions of the action thriller films we had collected images of.

Here is my mood board I have produced and I am now going to explain why I have chosen each picture in more detail.
1) This image is from the film Inception and this particular image is set on an aeroplane. This gave me inspiration for ideas of a potential plot storyline of our action thriller film we are going to create; for example setting our film in an airport or somebody travelling abroad. In addition to this, the main focus is on the man situated sitting at the front and the image is a medium close up shot as well as a two shot. From this, we are able to tell the relationship between the two characters and in some aspect the type of personality they have from their facial features in the image. Both male’s facial expression have a stern look on their face which gives the audience an impression they are determined to succeed in whatever lies ahead of them as well as they are strong men who have authority over people.
2) This image is from the film The Bourne Identity. This image shows the protagonist character Jason Bourne holding a gun. Therefore from this image, this showed the protagonist character being a male who's costume is all black from what we can see as it is a medium close up shot. He is currently holding a medium sized gun, positioned ready to shoot someone. Thriller action films are known for being fast paced films, giving the viewers a sense of thrill and suspense from the start to end of the film building anxiety for the viewers. The protagonist character is normally meant to be a "hero" character, therefore even though he is holding a gun ready to kill someone he is also trying to save either himself or someone else to. This left me with ideas for my group's film that our film needed to have the main protagonist character as a male as he is the one with authority.
3) I then decided to look at locations in which successful action thriller films had been set that I had watched as our film's target audience is females aged 16-24, as I fit into this target audience I decided on an iconic, memorable location from a successful action thriller film I have enjoyed and appealed to myself. This image is of a building in Paris in which the girls from the film Taken starring Liam Neeson stay in when they go travelling in Paris and shortly after they arrive they get taken. This image is mostly dark lighting which implies that something bad has occurred here and that made me think that maybe the images we would take for our magazine front cover and film poster need to be images of low key and dark lighting which is a connotation that the location is mysterious.
4) This image is of the protagonist character Liam Neeson who is globally known for playing Bryan Mills in the successful action thriller film Taken. This is an iconic still image from the film where he is on the phone to the man who has taken his daughter and he states the line “I will find you and I will kill you”. This is a close up image so the viewers are able to clearly see his facial expressions and can see that he is stressed out, worried but yet is still thinking ahead about what he is going to do next. This gave me inspiration that as a group we should think about including close up images of the protagonist character leaving an enigma.
5) The next image is also from the film Taken of his daughter hiding underneath a bed on the phone to her father Bryan Mills. This image comes before the picture situated above (number four) as she is telling her dad the truth about where she is and the audience are able to see her facial expressions clearly and can tell she is absolutely petrified. This image left me with the inspiration to include the start and potentially middle of the plot storyline of the film to leave the audience on a cliff hanger encouraging them to go and see my film more.
6) I decided to use another image from the film Taken as it is such a successful film that appeals to me so much and from what friends have told also appeals to them to. I decided on this image as it shows a prop in which the man is holding which is a knife from a particular type of culture so this shows the audience that she is a foreign country, currently in an environment she is not comfortable or used to. As this image is a two shot, the viewers are able to see clearly the relationship between the two characters and see the male standing behind her is about to slit her throat if somebody else in the scene gets any closer to them. This is a conventional scene that is seen in the majority of action thriller films as it builds up suspense for the audience.
7) This image is from the film Orphan and denotes a young girl with black makeup coming down from her eyes which implies to the audience that she is either the antagonist character or that something bad has occurred. As she is a young girl, this is not the sort of thing you would expect from a young girl. Orphan is a thriller film and this image enhances confusion to the viewer’s encouraging them to go and see the film to find out what has actually happened to the young girl. This gave me the inspiration to maybe include a character like this in my film.
8) The image denotes a male with a mask on with the word “God” situated on his forehead written in a black marker. This image is from the film The Purge Anarchy and is a film I have previously watched and it is not until near the end of the film you find out who this male really is. You would expect him to be a character who tries his best to save people especially with the word “God” on his forehead as God is known to always help and watch down on people and try leading them to good things in the future as he doesn’t want to anyone to suffer. Yet this image potentially in some aspect makes viewers think that this male is a bad character as he is hiding his identity and doesn’t want to be known for whom he really is, creating confusion for the audience.
9) This image is also from the film The Purge Anarchy, the characters in this film are also wearing masks with ginormous gleaming smiles but the male character is holding a large sword ready to attack anyone who comes in his eye line. This image is a high angle shot making these particular characters seem they have authority and power over people as they are the main focus in the image. As the masks have big smiles on, this could imply to the audience that they are happy and enjoying what they are doing in life as the sword implies they are going round killing people. This again leaves the audience thinking about what is actually occurring in the film leaving them in doubt. This gave me the inspiration to again have characters like this in my film as this image has two opposite elements to it.
10) This last image as well is from the film The Purge Anarchy, however I have decided to show this image to show the location of the film in which it is set in. The film’s location is in New York, America which is known as a city that never sleeps and as our initial ideas for our film is to set our film in London for numerous of reasons. These reasons being that London is mainly the only location we have access to easily as well as our target audience are all from London. Therefore, if it is a location the audiences recognise and know well for me it encourages me to go and see the film more as I want to see how they link the location to the film. By setting The Purge Anarchy in New York as London is a busy city as well there is a large population this means that many people could be affected who live in London in the plot encouraging more people to go and see the film.

Overall by creating this mood board it has given me inspiration and more ideas that I can bring to my group on what our film plot could be about and what to include.

Tasks List

There are many tasks that need to be completed in order to construct my coursework to the best of my ability to create a successful promotional campaign. Therefore in order to complete all the tasks I have created a list of tasks I need to complete, by doing this I will not forget any tasks that need to be created. Firstly, I will analyse a minimum of three horror trailers, identifying all the conventions included in a horror trailer. From this I can then make sure I include all of these conventions in my film trailer to achieve the best possible grade. When analysing a film trailer I will look at the way each character is introduced to the viewers as through marketing (the film trailer, poster and magazine front cover) this is where the viewer’s initially come to terms with the film and are able to see the protagonist and other characters included in the film. I will look at the camera shots and editing techniques used that worked best when filming my film trailer, thinking about including the camera shots and editing techniques that were successful in other film trailers in my own film trailer. As my film trailer will have a sub-genre as well, I have decided to analyse at least five trailers from that particular sub-genre. By analysing trailers from this particular sub-genre I am able to include all these conventions when creating my own film trailer.
After completing analysing film trailers from these genres I am then able to see what has previously been successful and can now include these conventions in my own film trailer. As we want our film to be mainly viewed by a particular target audience, we need to make sure that our film will appeal to our target audience. We will then need to research what films have appealed to our target audience and what type of films entertains those most. Through the use of online questionnaires directed at our target audience we are able to see a wide range of views from our target audience. This will be successful as after these questionnaires have been completed, as a group we are able to see what will appeal to them and make sure we include these elements in our own film trailer.
As a group we will then create the storyline of our film trailers, plotting a storyboard. As a group we are then able to research the plot, the locations we want our film trailer to be set in, mise-en-scene such as the costumes and props we want our actors to wear and use as well as the date and time of when we want to film to create an effective and successful film trailer. We are then able to create many drafts of our story board receiving feedback from our target audience by showing our target audience our story board drafts. By receiving feedback from our target audience we are able to see as a group what appeals to them and maybe what we need to change as a group which could make our film appeal to them even more. This way we are pleasing our target audience and encouraging them to view our trailer creating a successful promotional campaign.
After creating our film trailer, we will then each need to analyse film posters and film magazines as this is the next products we will be creating. By analysing film posters and film magazines we are able to see ourselves what has been successful and include these conventions in our own products, constructing a successful film poster and magazine to go alongside our film trailer to create a successful promotional campaign. When creating a film poster and magazine, I will create many drafts getting feedback from my target audience along the way to see what appeals to them and what I need to potentially change for my film poster and magazine to encourage my target audience to see my film.

Hey Bloggers!

Hey bloggers! I'm Tia Maletta and I am currently studying Media at A Level at Sacred Heart Sixth Form in Hammersmith.
